Job Title: Specialist – Youth Engagement

About the Job:

The Specialist – Youth Engagement will support Baltimore City Public Schools in its efforts to cultivate and elevate student voices, informing the district’s goals in key focus areas such as student wholeness, literacy, and leadership. This role involves developing and implementing strategies to assess, establish, and strengthen student engagement initiatives in secondary schools. The Specialist will collaborate with partners and vendors to identify best practices and resources, design professional development programs, and promote positive student-adult school partnerships.

Essential Functions:

  • Student Voice Integration:
    • Support the implementation of district efforts to incorporate student voices into school and district policies, procedures, and processes.
    • Create opportunities for student voices to be shared, received, and acted upon in school and district decision-making.
  • Student Leadership Directory:
    • Develop and maintain an active directory of student leaders and youth-serving organizations within schools and the community.
    • Conduct an inventory of existing methods for student leadership and voices at both district and school levels.
  • Professional Development:
    • Develop and deliver ongoing professional development for school-based and central office staff on best practices in student engagement.
    • Build relationships with key personnel in secondary schools to support the implementation of student voice initiatives.
  • Student Advisory Council:
    • Establish and maintain the CEO’s Student Advisory Council, comprising student representatives from secondary schools.
    • Ensure student representatives can serve as liaisons between the district and students at their schools.
  • Collaboration with College and Career Readiness Office:
    • Work collaboratively with the College and Career Readiness Office to engage the Associated Student Council of Baltimore City (ASCBC), Student Commissioner, and school-based student government associations.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
    • Develop and provide reports related to student engagement in school and district initiatives.
    • Maintain collaborative work with a motivated team of students from multiple schools to support student achievement and school improvement.
  • Research and Best Practices:
    • Stay updated on current research and best practices in student voice and educational reform efforts.
    • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies, following federal and state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, communications, or a related field is required.
    • A Master’s degree is preferred. The degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Experience:
    • Three to five years of experience in collaborating with and managing youth constituents ages 12-21, both individually and in group settings.
    • Three years of experience developing and facilitating youth leadership training, advisory councils, and/or educational opportunities.
    • Experience teaching or training youth and adults in urban environments.
    • Experience interpreting school academic and climate data.
    • Proven ability to manage projects from idea development to successful implementation.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Strong understanding of educational theory and research related to the concept of student voice and its impact on school reform.
    • Ability to lead and motivate a productive team of students.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups.
    • Ability to build rapport and credibility at multiple levels within an organization.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills targeting various stakeholders and age groups.
    • Proficiency in using multiple computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and policies affecting City Schools’ educators and English Learners.
    • Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
